Philadelphia is back on the cruise map in a meaningful way. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) announced its return to Philadelphia—describing it as the first cruise line to sail from the city in 15 years—with Norwegian Jewel launching a season of voyages to Bermuda and Canada & New England, followed by Norwegian Pearl extending the program into 2028.
This is especially timely for Mid-Atlantic travelers who love the idea of cruising without the extra hassle of flying to a cruise port. It also comes as Philadelphia marks a major milestone year, with the country’s 250th anniversary celebrated this summer.

What’s happening: cruising returns to Philly (and why that’s a big deal)
NCL’s leadership framed this as a regional milestone—particularly for travelers who’ve been waiting to cruise “from their own backyard.”
“Norwegian Cruise Line’s return to Philadelphia marks an exciting and meaningful milestone for us and the region,” said Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “For the first time in over 15 years, travelers in the Mid-Atlantic area will once again be able to sail from their own backyard with us to experience everything NCL is known for. With Norwegian Jewel leading our reintroduction and Norwegian Pearl following her later this year, we’re proud to bring our signature freedom and flexibility back to this incredible city and deliver the exceptional experiences our guests know and love.”
The ships and seasons: Norwegian Jewel now, Norwegian Pearl next
Norwegian Jewel (2026)
Through Aug. 27, 2026, Norwegian Jewel sails Bermuda itineraries designed around destination time and convenience for Mid-Atlantic travelers.
Then, in peak foliage season, Norwegian Jewel shifts to 10- and 11-day Canada & New England itineraries from Sept. 5 through Oct. 7, 2026, with embarkation options from Philadelphia or Quebec City—a smart option if you want to turn your cruise into a longer land + sea trip.
Norwegian Pearl (late 2026 through April 2028)
Beginning in late 2026, Norwegian Pearl replaces Norwegian Jewel and continues sailings from Philadelphia through April 2028, reinforcing NCL’s commitment to the port and expanding options beyond the initial seasonal mix.
Itinerary highlights: Bermuda, Canada & New England, plus future Caribbean/Bahamas
Bermuda from Philadelphia: built around overnight time
NCL notes that seven-day Bermuda sailings include an overnight in Bermuda (Royal Naval Dockyard), plus a visit to either Charleston, SC or Halifax, Nova Scotia.
For those wanting more time away, a nine-day sailing departing Aug. 27, 2026 includes an extended Bermuda overnight plus Canadian calls including Saint John, Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, and Halifax.
Canada & New England: fall foliage-friendly
From Sept. 5–Oct. 7, 2026, the 10- and 11-day itineraries are positioned for fall scenery and historic coastal ports across Maine, Massachusetts, and Eastern Canada.
Bahamas + Great Stirrup Cay (select sailings in 2027)
On select Bahamas sailings in February and March 2027, NCL notes calls to Great Stirrup Cay with new enhancements—including a new pool, splash zone, adults-only beach club area, and the nearly six-acre Great Tides Waterpark (19 waterslides, cliffside jumps, Splash Cay, and an 800-foot river-style attraction) beginning summer 2026.
A new terminal is part of the story
In collaboration with PhilaPort and Tinicum Township, NCL’s parent company is building a brand-new terminal expected to open this cruise season to support easier embarkation and disembarkation.
“This is a defining moment for The Port of Philadelphia,” said PhilaPort Executive Director & CEO Jeff Theobald. “The arrival of Norwegian Cruise Line and Norwegian Jewel signals the beginning of a new chapter for our port, our city, and the entire region. As we continue to grow beyond cargo operations, this new cruise service strengthens our position as a gateway to global travel and commerce while delivering meaningful economic impact for Pennsylvania.”
Bonus idea: add a Philadelphia “Cruisetour” before you sail
If you want to turn embarkation day into an experience (instead of a logistics day), NCL highlights a Philadelphia Cruisetour with guided visits to iconic sites—Elfreth’s Alley, Betsy Ross House, Christ Church, Carpenter’s Hall, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, plus time at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
About the onboard experience: Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Pearl
Both ships are described as having capacity for over 2,300 guests, with accommodations ranging from inside staterooms to suites in The Haven (NCL’s “ship-within-a-ship” concept). NCL also highlights broad dining and entertainment options and the Mandara Spa with a Thermal Suite. Norwegian Jewel additionally features the adults-only Vibe Beach Club.
Ironmill Travel planning tip: choose your “Philadelphia cruise personality”
If you’re deciding between these sailings, here’s the simplest way to pick:
- Choose Bermuda if you want an overnight-heavy, relaxed “beach + strolling” rhythm.
- Choose Canada & New England if you want ports with history + scenery (especially in fall).
- Choose Bahamas/Caribbean expansion if you want warm-weather variety once Norwegian Pearl broadens the program.
Tell me your ideal month and whether you’re a “sea days = relax” traveler or a “ports = go-go-go” traveler—and I’ll narrow the best-fit options.
