United MileagePlus Update: Bigger Earning + Award Discounts + More Saver Access for Cardholders

Eligible United MileagePlus cardholders can earn more miles on United flights, receive automatic award discounts, and unlock expanded Saver Award access—including premium cabins.

MileagePlus members with a credit, debit or Chase co-branded card can soon earn up to twice as many miles for United flights as non-cardholders, get at least 10% off award tickets and access to exclusive Saver Award fares

If you fly United with any regularity, this is a meaningful shift in how MileagePlus rewards “true” loyalty—especially if you hold a United MileagePlus credit or debit card (including Chase co-branded cards). The headline: cardholders can earn more miles on United flights, save miles on award tickets, and unlock expanded access to lower-priced Saver Awards—including in premium cabins.

Quick Facts for Travelers (Save This)

  • What it is: United is expanding perks for MileagePlus members who hold and use a United MileagePlus credit or debit card—more flight miles, automatic award discounts, and expanded access to Saver Award inventory (including Polaris Saver availability for more members).

  • Who it’s best for: Frequent United flyers; MileagePlus Premier members; travelers who redeem miles often; families building balances through card spend; anyone targeting premium-cabin awards.

  • Where: United-operated flights and MileagePlus award bookings (United channels).

  • When: New earning rates apply to tickets purchased on or after April 2; expanded UK-style “always on” award discounts and Saver access are positioned as ongoing benefits for eligible cardholders.

  • Trip length / format: Any United itinerary—especially trips you plan to pay for with a United card or book with miles.

  • Key highlights: Up to 2x miles vs non-cardholders on United flights; 10%+ off award tickets (and 15%+ for Premier cardholders); expanded Saver inventory access (including Polaris Saver seats) for general members with a card; examples as low as 72,000 miles (10% off) or 68,000 miles (15% off) for select Polaris Saver awards.

  • Why it matters: Faster earning + lower redemption costs compounds value—especially for premium seats, where award pricing is the biggest hurdle.

  • Planning tip: If you’re chasing award travel, optimize three levers: earn rate, award discount, and Saver inventory access—then plan dates/routes where Saver space appears.

  • How to book: Tell Ironmill Travel your typical routes, status level, and which United card (if any) you hold—we’ll map the smartest earn/redeem strategy for your travel style.

What’s changing (in plain English)

United is adding three “big levers” for MileagePlus members who hold an eligible United MileagePlus credit or debit card:

1) Earn more miles on United flights (and even more when you pay with the card)

Table comparing MileagePlus earn rates for United flights by status level, showing non-cardholder miles per dollar versus cardmember miles per dollar for General Member through Premier 1K, with a note that Basic Economy reduces rates by 3 miles per dollar.

MileagePlus members who hold a United card can earn more miles per dollar on United flights, by status level.

Primary cardholders will earn up to twice as many miles per dollar from United for United flights compared to non-cardholders—and can stack additional miles by paying with an eligible United card.

A few examples United shared:

  • A MileagePlus 1K member using a United Club card on eligible United flights can earn 17 total miles per dollar.

  • A MileagePlus Gold member using a United Quest card can earn 13 total miles per dollar—described as more than double vs Gold members without a card.

  • A general MileagePlus member using a United Explorer card can earn 9 total miles per dollar—described as three times vs general non-cardholders.

  • A general member using a United Club card can earn 11 total miles per dollar—described as nearly four times vs a non-cardholder.

Important note for Basic Economy: General MileagePlus members may now need a United card to earn miles on a Basic Economy ticket.

2) Award ticket discounts: “always-on” savings for cardholders

United says eligible cardholders will receive at least 10% off every United award ticket they book. If you’re a MileagePlus Premier member with a United card, the discount is at least 15%.

United provided simple examples to illustrate the math:

  • An economy award priced at 15,000 miles would price at 13,500 miles (10% less) for primary cardholders without Premier status.

  • A premium-cabin award priced at 200,000 miles would price at 170,000 miles (15% less) for primary cardholders with Premier status.

This matters because consistent discounts change how quickly a balance becomes “useful”—especially for families booking multiple tickets.

3) Expanded Saver Awards: more access to the lowest-priced seats (including Polaris Saver)

Saver Awards are United’s lowest-priced award tickets. United is expanding access in two ways:

More Saver access for cardholders

General MileagePlus members who hold a United credit or debit card will get access to Saver Award inventory in United Polaris Business Class that was previously limited to higher Premier tiers.

Stacking Saver access with new discounts

United also shared “floor” examples for Polaris Saver pricing with the new award discounts:

  • As low as 72,000 miles (10% off) for general members with a card

  • As low as 68,000 miles (15% off) for Premier cardholders

United also noted that, historically, cardholders have often seen meaningful savings under a “Cardmembers Save” banner compared with standard award pricing—and the idea here is that expanded Saver access plus new award discounts can compound the value further.

United’s positioning (direct quote)

United’s Chief Commercial Officer framed the changes as a loyalty-forward evolution:

“The most rewarding way to fly United is as a MileagePlus member, and the best way to get the most value from the MileagePlus program is to have one of our credit or debit cards. MileagePlus is designed to reward loyalty to United, and our best customers deserve the best benefits in the industry,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s Chief Commercial Officer. “MileagePlus members can now earn more miles faster with a United card – and every one of those miles will go further with our always-on award ticket discounts and expanded access to Saver Award fares.”

Which cards are included (examples United highlighted)

Table listing extra miles per dollar earned from the card issuer when paying with eligible United cards, including United Explorer, United Quest, United Club, United Gateway (after $10,000 annual spend), and MileagePlus Debit Rewards (after $10,000 annual spend), with the per-dollar increases shown.

Additional miles per dollar from the card issuer when you purchase United flights with an eligible United card.

United lists eligible cards including:

  • United Explorer Card

  • United Quest Card

  • United Club Card

  • United Business Card

  • United Club Business Card

  • United Gateway Card

  • MileagePlus Debit Rewards Card

United also notes eligible cards in select U.S. territories and international locations, and plans to introduce new cards in Brazil, Canada, and the U.K.

How to use this like a pro (strategy, not hype)

If you mostly pay cash for flights

  • Prioritize the higher flight earn rate and pay with the eligible United card.

  • Use miles for shorter-haul routes or family travel where award discounts stretch further.

If you mainly redeem miles

  • Focus on discount + Saver availability. The discount reduces the “price,” but Saver access increases your odds of finding the seat you want.

  • Be flexible with dates/routes to catch Saver space—especially for premium cabins.

If you book Basic Economy sometimes

  • Re-check your earning expectations—general members may need a United card to earn miles on Basic Economy tickets.
