Quick Facts for Travelers

  • What it is: A Holafly eSIM is a digital data plan you install on an eSIM-capable phone—no physical SIM card required.

  • Who it’s best for: International travelers who want see-it-all convenience: families, couples, cruise/land tour travelers, and anyone who relies on maps, messaging, and ride apps.

  • Where: Worldwide coverage by destination; we used it across Greece, Italy, and Spain.

  • When: Set up before you depart; activate when you arrive.

  • Trip length / format: Plans typically range from short trips to extended travel (multi-day up to longer stays, depending on destination availability).

  • Key highlights: QR-code setup, strong coverage options (3G/4G/5G where available), fast activation on arrival, 24/7 support, and unlimited-data plans in many destinations.

  • Why it matters: Avoid expensive roaming, save time at airports, and land with working data for navigation, reservations, and updates.

  • Planning tip: Install the eSIM before departure and leave your primary SIM’s data OFF to avoid roaming charges; use your physical SIM for calls/texts only if needed.

  • How to book: Purchase your Holafly eSIM, apply promo code IRONMILL at checkout for 5% off, then follow the installation steps emailed to you.

Why we used an eSIM (and why it’s now my default recommendation)

On international trips, the first hour after landing is when you most need connectivity: navigation, messaging your driver/hotel, translating, pulling reservations, and confirming meeting points. The old approach (airport Wi-Fi + finding a SIM shop + swapping cards) works… but it’s friction-heavy.

On our trip through Greece, Italy, and Spain, we used Holafly to simplify that entire “arrival scramble.” Once installed, it was essentially: land → activate → go.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM that lives inside your device (no plastic chip to swap). You install it by scanning a QR code (or entering a manual code), then activate the plan at your destination.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What is an eSIM?”—the simplest answer is: it’s the fastest way to get travel data without hunting down a physical SIM. (Quote preserved exactly.)

What Holafly does well (the traveler value)

1) Installation is straightforward

After purchase, you receive an email with a QR code and step-by-step instructions. Most travelers can complete setup in a few minutes.

2) Data-first simplicity

Holafly is designed for travelers who primarily need data (maps, WhatsApp/iMessage, email, ride apps, translation, tour confirmations). It’s intentionally uncomplicated: pick destination + duration, then use it for data.

3) Strong coverage experience

Holafly generally supports 3G/4G/5G connectivity where available. Like any mobile service, there can be slower pockets depending on geography and local networks, but overall it’s built for “on the move” travel.

4) Support and self-management

You can typically manage plans and account details through your Holafly account/portal. If you misplace your QR code, Holafly support can re-send it.

What to know before you buy (the honest caveats)

Holafly eSIMs are data-only

A Holafly eSIM does not typically include a local phone number for standard calls/SMS. If you need voice calling, plan to use:

  • Your regular SIM for voice/SMS (with roaming controls), or

  • App-based calls like WhatsApp/FaceTime (data dependent)

Turn on data roaming for the eSIM

Many travelers worry “data roaming” automatically means extra fees. With an eSIM, turning on data roaming is often required for the eSIM to connect properly—as long as your eSIM is the active data line, you should not be billed roaming by your home carrier. The key is to disable cellular data on your primary SIM.

Transfers are limited

If you change phones mid-trip, eSIM transfers can be limited. Assume you should install it on the phone you’ll actually travel with.

When to set it up (best practice)

Set it up before departure, while you still have reliable home Wi-Fi and time to troubleshoot. Then, once you land:

  1. Switch your phone’s cellular data to the Holafly eSIM

  2. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM

  3. Keep your primary SIM’s data OFF

Bottom line

If you value convenience, predictable connectivity, and a smoother arrival day, Holafly is an excellent fit—especially for multi-country itineraries like ours. If you need traditional phone calls and a local number, you’ll want a different setup (or a hybrid approach).
